  • Available in standard lengths between 1.5 m and 2.4 m
  • Various finishes, including smooth, textured or coloured textured
  • 100% termite resistant
  • Due to the weight of the sleepers equipment is required to raise them.
  • Constructed with hot-dipped galvanized steel posts
  • Tend to be more expensive but lasts forever
  • Can be built up to 3 m high
  • Possibility to install fences directly on the sleeper
  • Robust and durable

Timber Retaining Wall

  • Posts made of PCA-treated hardwood, with a choice of CCA hardwood or pine lumber
  • Lighter option
  • Unlike concrete, you can custom cut the wood for specific angles
  • Perfect for building stairs or planter boxes
  • Wood stain options

  • Depending on the desired height, engineering adjustments may be required to meet requirements.

Link Block Retaining Wall

  • Various styles are available
  • No deep footings are required. Strip footings as shallow as 200mm can be made.
  • Great appearance, can be shaped and curved, so there are many options for the end result.
  • Different colour combinations that can be matched to the home.
  • Textured surface
  • Recommended maximum height of 1 metre

Besser Block Retaining Wall

Frequently Asked Questions

There are several reasons why homeowners may choose to build a retaining wall on their property:

  1. To prevent erosion: A retaining wall can help prevent soil erosion on a slope by holding back soil and vegetation.
  2. To create usable space: A retaining wall can create flat, usable space in an otherwise steep or uneven yard.
  3. To improve aesthetics: A retaining wall can be used to create a visually appealing border or dividing line between different areas of a property.
  4. To increase property value: A well-designed and built retaining wall can add value to a property by improving the overall appearance and functionality of the outdoor space.
  5. To protect against landslides: In some cases, a retaining wall may be necessary to prevent landslides from occurring on a property, especially if the property is located in an area prone to landslides.
  6. To support structures: A retaining wall can be used to support structures such as decks, patios, and even houses built on sloping ground.

Concrete sleepers and timber sleepers are both commonly used materials for building retaining walls. Each type of sleeper has its own unique benefits and drawbacks, and the choice between concrete and timber will depend on the specific needs and requirements of the project.

Some advantages of using concrete sleepers for a retaining wall include:

  1. Durability: Concrete sleepers are more resistant to decay and damage from insects and rot than timber sleepers, which can make them a more durable choice for a retaining wall.
  2. Low maintenance: Concrete sleepers do not require any special maintenance, such as painting or staining, to protect them from the elements.
  3. Cost: Concrete sleepers may be more cost-effective than timber sleepers in the long run due to their durability and low maintenance requirements.
  4. Strength: Concrete sleepers are generally stronger than timber sleepers and are able to withstand greater loads and pressures, which can be important in retaining wall design.

On the other hand, some advantages of using timber sleepers for a retaining wall include:

  1. Aesthetics: Timber sleepers can add a natural, rustic look to a retaining wall, which may be appealing to some homeowners.
  2. Ease of installation: Timber sleepers are generally easier to cut and shape than concrete sleepers, which can make them quicker and easier to install.
  3. Versatility: Timber sleepers can be used in a variety of retaining wall designs, including curves and angles, which may be more difficult to achieve with concrete sleepers.

Ultimately, the choice between concrete and timber sleepers for a retaining wall will depend on the specific needs and preferences of the homeowner and the requirements of the project. It may be advisable to consult with a professional landscape designer or contractor to determine the best material for the project.

In Sydney the responsibility for paying for a retaining wall that is on a boundary fenceline may depend on the specific circumstances of the case.
Some possible scenarios and options for determining who pays for the retaining wall include:

  1. Both parties agree to pay for the retaining wall: If both parties agree to share the cost of the retaining wall, they may choose to split the cost equally or agree on a different arrangement.
  2. One party pays for the retaining wall: If one party is solely responsible for the need for the retaining wall, they may choose to pay for the entire cost of the wall. For example, if one party has built a structure that requires a retaining wall to support it, they may choose to pay for the wall themselves.
Or if one neighbour has damaged a wall or the surrounding land, then it’s generally their responsibility to repair or replace it.
  3. The cost of the retaining wall is determined by a mediator or arbitrator: If the parties are unable to come to an agreement on who should pay for the retaining wall, they may choose to seek the assistance of a mediator or arbitrator to help resolve the dispute. The mediator or arbitrator will consider the specific circumstances of the case and may make a recommendation on how the cost of the retaining wall should be shared.

Ultimately, the responsibility for paying for a retaining wall on a boundary fenceline will depend on the specific circumstances of the case and the agreement reached by the parties involved.
It may be advisable to consult with a legal professional to determine the best course of action.

Water runoff or drainage issues can significantly impact a retaining wall, especially if the wall is not designed and constructed properly.
When water runs off a slope and hits a retaining wall, it can cause erosion and undermine the wall’s stability. In some cases, the pressure of the water runoff can cause the wall to lean or even collapse.
To prevent these issues, it is essential to design and build a retaining wall to effectively manage water runoff. This may include incorporating features such as drainage channels, weep holes, and filter fabric to allow water to pass through the wall and be directed away from the wall and foundation. In addition, it is important to ensure that the wall is built on a solid foundation and is properly reinforced to withstand the pressure of water runoff.
